Near the ponte sisto in Trastevere, Freni e Frizoni is a staple for students, locals, and even tourists in the know because of its convenient location. Every evening, hundreds of young people pass through the bar ordering cocktails and loading plastic plates full of hummus, grilled veggies, chickpeas, lentils, beets, and cinnamon apple slices. Since Freni e Frizoni is as easy 20 minute walk from our apartment, we have made several appearances there.
For 10 euros, Freni e Frizoni bar staff will mix up a unique cocktail from their seasonal menu or for 6 euros you can enjoy wine or beer. Whichever you choose, the apperitivo buffet is included in the price. My favorite this summer has been the Triple X, which blends patron, honey, and lavender into a refreshing concoction. Most foods in the buffet have a Mediterranean influence and although they are not the same every time, there are only slight variations of the overall theme. The apperitivo is always light, not heavy. Usually there is just one type of simple pasta, but most options are veggie based.
Do not expect a place to sit down, as there rarely is one. Instead, people take their drinks and food into the small piazza outside the bar to eat al fresco. A visit to Freni e Frizoni is a fantastic way to begin an evening in Trastevere and can be used as an appetizer or if you are on a really tight budget you can use it as your dinner as well.
