Overcoming my Hatred of Technology

Would you like to hear a not so funny joke?

I just spent 25 minutes writing a blog post about how much I hate technology, clicked “post”, and immediately 6 paragraphs of text and an image disappeared into cyberspace… POOF!

Have you ever had this happen to you?!?!?!??!?

Okay, okay. So here’s how the original post went… 3 paragraphs of ranting about how technology “shuts down”, “refreshes”, “restarts”, etc. With a good dose of praise for my two chock full filing cabinets since they never need to be turned off then turned on again, as well as a few sentences about how technology seems to not like me… I think it’s a two sided hatred, rather. The glory of writing down every single workout that I have done with my personal training clients, EVER, is that they could go into some folder or some binder and be placed in a filing cabinet or on a bookshelf and be found again if needed.

I clicked “post” and because I had been posting in “Quick Post” mode, nothing was to show of my 25 minutes of labor over thinking of the right word to express my need to touch and feel things in order for them to make sense. In case you’re wondering – KINESTHETIC.

The Google is still not recognizing it as a real word. Case in point.

The last 3 paragraphs addressed the positive benefits and things I have learned since challenging myself to become more digitized in 2014…

I would now like to rescind all of those statements…

What I would like to leave this post of posts with is a simple observation, and one that works whether you love technology and in Steve Jobs you trust, or hate technology and would prefer to sit in your reading nook and write with a calligraphy pen you bought in Florence (ahem, me.) That observation is that if you write down and record what you are working towards, you WILL see results. I know this is a fundamental part of why my clients over the past 4 years have seen the results they want.

So many people are working towards fitness goals, but they have no indication of where they started or where they are going. So many trainers work with clients and scribble their workouts on scratch paper and toss it away or input it into a note in their iPhone and forget about it when the phone syncs. I can tell you from personal experience that recording how many reps you are doing, what weight you are using, your endurance, your speed, and your heart rate that you will see a difference if you strive for a change.

You will be able to lift more weight – faster, run longer distances – quicker, and notice a long lasting difference on the scale if you simply take and extra 10 – 15 minutes to plan and record your workouts. Acting on what you know and what you notice will impact your routine and take it to the next level.

As I keep at my challenge to myself to digitize my client’s workout summaries and progress, I am remaining positive just as long as my ink does not run out. Or my window does not freeze. Or my changes do not save. Or my file cannot be found. Or my email is not delivered. “Updates” to come. Enjoy the journey.
